Foxconn Brings DirectX 10 To The Broke Masses -

So you’ve got your Windows Vista and you want to get a hold of a little bit of that DirectX 10 action, but your bummer of a video card is being a buzz kill? That sucks. You’re supposed to upgrade that, but who’s got that kind of scratch laying around? Those cards cost an arm and a leg and probably some other stuff. Sit down, dweeb, Foxconn’s got you set.

Today the silicon-card maker announced two new cards made for DirectX 10 based around the Nvidia GeForce 8400GS. And they both fall in the sub-$100 category. Sure, that could mean $99.99, but it’s still a good deal. The cards are pretty much the same, though one has 256MB RAM whilst the other has a wimpy 128MB.

We don’t have a lot of details, just that they exist and will hit the market soon. Their maxrez (that’s maximum resolution, n00b) is 2,560×1,600, which is totally respectable. The core clock is 450MHz with 850MHz on the memory clock. I don’t expect you to understand that, but it basically means they’re not the fastest around, but still plenty speedy for under a Benjamin. Word.

All defragmenters are based on this API, including commercial defragmenters. JkDefrag is therefore very solid and there is no risk of losing data. You can stop the program at any time, it will finish the current file in the background. If your disks use NTFS then you're even safe when the computer crashes in the middle of defragging. Nevertheless, it's still a good idea to backup before defragmenting, just like with other defragmenters, because the heavy use of the harddisk may trigger a hardware fault.

Changes in this version:

- Changed the message in the docs about the screensaver under Vista, it works if User Account Control is turned off.
- Bugfix in "-a 3" (fast optimize). It would not use Perfect Fit for gaps that were larger than all the data already processed.

Apple passes Amazon to become the #3 US music retailer -

Things must seem pretty rosy in Cupertino -- just a week before the mega-hyped launch of you-know-what, market research group NPD's quarterly survey shows Apple has passed Amazon to become the third biggest music retailer in the US. This isn't the biggest of surprises, since Steve himself predicted that the iTunes Store would overtake Amazon at the Showtime event back in September, but the leap to #3 is a little unexpected, since Apple also outpaced Target last quarter. iTunes is now rocking a 10% market share, just behind Wal-Mart at 16% and Best Buy at 14%, and while we don't expect to see it pass those two giants anytime soon, we'd bet that uptick in DRM-free sales has got the iTMS crew at Apple licking their chops.
