Ubuntu 7.10 is officially released, and ready for download through a Ubuntu mirror or through Bittorrent. Lots of fans are happy that they can finally start using a non RC (Release Candidate) version. Ubuntu 7.10 is officially released, and ready for download through a Ubuntu mirror or through Bittorrent. Lots of fans are happy that they can finally start using a non RC (Release Candidate) version. The wired review goes in-depth into what has changes and what is now available in the new version of Ubunutu.

Canonical has announced the official release of Ubuntu 7.10 (codenamed Gutsy Gibbon), the latest version of the popular Debian-based Linux distribution. Ubuntu 7.10 includes the GNOME 2.20 desktop environment as well as recent versions of Xorg, OpenOffice.org, and Firefox.

Several significant new features have been added in Ubuntu 7.10. The Compiz window manager, which adds rich visual effects to the Ubuntu user interface, is enabled by default on systems with compatible hardware. Ubuntu 7.10 also includes support for display hotplugging and Bulletproof X, which simplify graphics hardware configuration and make it easier to use multiple displays. Other new additions include automated printer installation, support for writing to NTFS partitions, the Tracker search and indexing system, and a more energy-efficient kernel that will reduce heat output and extend productive laptop usage time.

This is really funny, NSA employee's have problems trusting each other.
Underfunded NSA Suffers Brownouts - An anonymous reader writes "Almost ten years after the an internal report, and a year after a Baltimore sun story warned that the electrical system at the fort Meade NSA HQ couldn't keep up with the growing electricity demand ... the problem has got worse. The 'NSA has had to resort to partial, rolling brownouts at its computer farms and scheduled power outages and some offices are experiencing significant power disruptions'. NSA director Alexander testified to congress about this problem. It is suggested he wanted to add more than $800 million to the 07 budget. A recent public powerpoint presentation suggested 70% of of all intelligence spending goes to contractors. It also included a graph, without numbers, of this spending. It suggests that US intelligence spending is around $60 billion. An internal survey that showed NSA employees have problems trusting each other."

Fastcgi and the dreaded aborted: select() failed

I was getting reports of "500 Internal Server Errors" on two of my web servers. And after further investigation it looks like it was related to the following error.

(4)Interrupted system call: FastCGI: comm with server "php-fastcgi.fcgi" aborted: select() failed

After doing some reasearch I stumbled upon the following patch.

Exim4 and PHP and PHP-CGI mail() function using incorrect From: and applying Sender: headers.

If you're using Exim4 and PHP as a module or as a CGI with suexec. You may have noticed some issues with your mail. Specifically you would have noticed that either the "From:" header was using "nobody@machinename" or "user@machine name, its also possibly that you had an additional header called "Sender:". There are two things you need to do to fix this. You first need to make sure that your "php.ini" has the following value "sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i". Which is the default, double check this variable as it might be set to something else.
